Welcome! This is the homepage for the Ring of Death. Started in June of 1996, the Webring contains great homepages dedicated to the topic of death and dying around the web, all linked together in a circular fashion. If you are interested in joining or would like to jump to a random site in the ring, see below.

What we want for the Ring:

Cemetery sites (see City of the Silent, Greenwood Cemetery and Graveyards of Chicago)

Consumer awareness sites (see The American Cryogenics Society and the Funeral Help Page -- I see diversity as good here.)

History sites with reference to graveyards/obituaries (see Dead Presidents and The Political Graveyard fall into this category)

Grief and virtual graveyards (see Lightning Strike)

A few outstanding stores specializing in death-related products and artwork (I believe in an InterNet free for commerce as well for other forms of speech)

While we respect diversity, there are a few kinds of pages which are not suitable for the ring:

Personal home pages

Sites advocating violence against others or against self

Sites with lots of links but no substance of their own

Sites with no death content

Ring collector's pages

Horror and Gothic sites (please join the Ring of Fear instead!)

How to join the ring

Here are the steps that need to be followed to join The Ring of Death. Please follow them closely to preserve the integrity of the ring! If

Save a copy of the two Ring of Death graphics you see below. I call the one on the left dring.jpg and the one on the right dnring.jpg.
Add the below HTML fragment to your death-related page.

Change the e-mail address and name so that they are your own.
Make sure the fragment points to images on your own site. The Webring link, however, should still point to http://www.best.com/~gazissax/silence/ring.html.
When you are done, it should look like this:

Fill out the below form to register your site and write down the Site ID number you are assigned. This will put your page in the Ring of Death's 'Queue', where it will remain until someone adds you to the ring. This does not insert you in the ring; the actual insertion is done later.

Change the four references to http://www.webring.org/cgi-bin/webring (one on the dnring.jpg image and the other three a bit further down) so that the id= is followed by your Site ID number. For example, if your site ID is 123, the href should be something like http://www.webring.org/cgi-bin/webring?id=123&next&ring=death.
E-mail the owner of an existing Ring of Death site and ask them to add you to the ring. Be sure to include your Site ID Number in the e-mail message. They will probably (hopefully) want to look at your page to make sure it is worthy of addition and make sure the Ring of Death HTML fragment on your page is okay.
After checking out your page, the existing Ring of Death site's owner will take your Site ID Number and use it to add you to the ring. You should then receive an e-mail telling you you've been added.
That's it! You should now be able to navigate the entire ring until to make it back to your own page (although it may take a while). An easy way to make sure it is working is to go to the homepage of the person who added you and see if the next button takes you to your own page.

To add another person

Once you are a member of the Ring of Death, you have the power to add other pages to the ring as well. Here's what you do:

Type in their Site ID below and click Test.

Note that this second graphic is meant only as a shortcut. To be part of the Ring, you must include the complete html code featured above somewhere in your pages. You may link the small icons to your first page and any other pages and then include the complete code on another page. The complete code must appear somewhere in your pages and the small icons must, at very least, lead on to the Ring homepage and to the next site as shown above.

Important tips

Try to only add pages to the ring that you think are "worthy" of that honor. If the page is mere visceral pornography, don't add it. If it merely uses death as a vehicle for some other expression, don't add it: a few skulls and bones don't make a death-related page. If it is just links and Java and has no real content, don't add it. If it is just a hatchet job on other people's stuff, don't add it. If it is horror, tell the site owner about the upcoming Ring of Fear. Try to only add pages that you think will contribute to the ring community.
If someone asks to be added to the ring, have them make the necessary changes to their page, including all of the changes to the HTML fragment above that are necessary (e-mail address, graphics, site ID number, etc.) and check to see that they are correct before inserting them in the ring. This will guarantee that the ring will correctly function immediately.
